The consolidation of the rules vary by each part as follows:
Part 1 - Conditions of Classification
The ABS Rules for Conditions of Classification was formerly composed of a “generic” Part 1 booklet that applied to many Rules and Guides, plus Supplement Part 1 booklets in each Rule or Guide that contain the specific requirements for classification of the specific vessel type. All of the Part 1 booklets have been combined into a single Part 1 with each of the Supplements becoming a Chapter.
Part 2 – Materials and Welding
This Part is common to both Marine and Offshore Rules.
Part 3 – Hull Construction
The MODU Rule and MOU Guide hull construction requirements have been consolidated into a single Part. Part 3 has been made much more generic than the MODU Rules, with the drilling‐specific operational requirements being moved to the new Part 8, Specific Unit Types. Unlike the largely editorial revisions to the Generic Rules (Parts 1, 2 & 7) this Part has substantial organizational revisions and should be reviewed carefully.
Part 4 – Machinery and Systems
Similar to Part 3, the System and Machinery requirements of the MODU Rules and MOU Guide have been consolidated into a single Part. As in Part 3, this Part has been made much more generic than the MODU Rules, with the drilling‐specific operational requirements being moved to a new Part 8 for Specific Unit Types. This Part has substantial organizational revisions and should be reviewed carefully.
Part 5 – Fire and Safety – Measures and Features
This Part has been made much more generic than the MODU Rules, with the drilling‐specific operational requirements being moved to the new Part 8, Specific Unit Types.
Part 6 – Equipment and Machinery Certification
This Part correlates to the present Part 6 of the MODU Rules. The drilling‐specific operational requirements have been moved to the new Part 8, Specific Unit Types.
Part 7 – Surveys
This Part correlates to the present Part 7 of the MODU Rules. It has remained largely intact except that references to drilling units and operations have been made more generic.
Part 8 – Specific Unit Types
This is a new Part that covers additional requirements for each type of units (Drilling and Non‐drilling Units). Requirements for non‐drilling units are based on the current MOU Guide. Specific unit types include:
